The study aimed to determine whether same day discharge criteria could be expanded in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab for outpatient elective procedures to reduce inpatient utilization during a pandemic. The researchers conducted a literature search using various databases and analyzed nine articles using the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model. <br /><br />During the COVID-19 pandemic, 76% of outpatients were able to go home on the same day due to expanded discharge criteria, compared to 69% pre-COVID. This resulted in approximately 200 fewer outpatient procedures being performed. The implementation of expanded discharge criteria was found to facilitate same day discharge in a safe and efficient manner, with patients reporting satisfaction. <br /><br />However, the impact of patients refraining, limiting, or delaying office visits to Cardiology physician practices as a result of the pandemic is unknown. It is also suggested that outpatient cardiology procedure volumes may take several years to reach pre-pandemic levels. <br /><br />The authors express gratitude to the healthcare professionals involved in providing care in the Cath Lab and Prep/Recovery teams. <br /><br />Overall, the study highlights the potential benefits of expanded same day discharge criteria for outpatient cardiac procedures, particularly during a pandemic.
