Pdf Summary
Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide, including in the United States. Recent studies have shown that mindfulness practices can have a positive impact on risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as smoking, obesity, and stress. To explore the potential benefits of mindfulness for patients with cardiovascular conditions, a quality improvement project was conducted at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

The project aimed to provide guided mindfulness activities for patients admitted to the hospital with primary cardiovascular conditions. A baseline survey was given to assess stress levels, symptom severity, overall well-being, fear of illness, and hope for recovery. Following the completion of a 15-minute mindfulness activity, significant improvements were observed in subjective stress, symptoms, and fear. However, there were no significant improvements in well-being or hope.

The next steps for this project include recruiting more participants, implementing the mindfulness intervention in the cardiac rehabilitation program, and conducting follow-up surveys on the continued use of mindfulness practices outside of the hospital. The goal is to expand the use of mindfulness techniques to other patient populations and even providers within the hospital.

In summary, this quality improvement project aims to improve outcomes for patients with cardiovascular conditions by offering a low-cost, non-invasive, and non-pharmacological intervention. Additionally, it aims to enhance patient satisfaction by addressing the physical and mental effects of stressors in the hospital setting.
